As far as the eye can see, prickly pears plants all around the villages of Mala and Guatiza. If you look closer, you will find on many cactus a white powder coating. These are the deposits of hatched scale insects, from these is, in an elaborate process, the purple dye carmine obtained.
In Guatiza, Cesar Manrique has given, with his Jardin de Cactus, his reference to scale insects and the cactus. In a former quarry, the well known artist designed a wonderful garden, with about 10,000 species of cactus.
